The one thing I don’t like is that BC prohibits you from having an exhaust system that makes any more noise than factory, without giving you a hard decibel limit. I guess that despite it being perfectly legal in all other ways, the exhaust system on my truck (which uses stock diameter piping and a chambered muffler, BTW) is illegal due to section 7.03, point (5) of the province’s motor vehicle act. I hate subjective laws.

How do they determine how loud a factory exhaust is? Do they have a chart with decibel amounts for every car ever made? that is a massively bullshit law.

It’s all subjective. They don’t have charts or statistics at all. It’s a money grab, pure and simple.

BC is a very nice province, but damn if they don’t have some stupid laws when it comes to cars. That’s one thing I like about Alberta, nobody gives a shit if you’re driving a car that’s almost 90% rust and has an exhaust as loud as a jet engine.

Yeah. I guess I just hate this law in particular, because it’s a blatant money grab. The other exhaust laws make sense (no cutouts on the street, no flames, etc.), it’s just that even DOT-approved cat-backs are illegal up here.

there are regulations for new vehicles, here is an example:

https://www.cga.ct.gov/2003/olrdata/t…

a car with a factory exhaust can be assumed to be below those limits. but an aftermarket system isn’t necessarily going to exceed those limits, so automatically fining people with one based on no data is sketchy at best.

Put in a factory exhaust and use salt compresses to rust a hole in it. They can’t get you for it because technically it’s stock.

Damn. Sounds like a (then sue) moment but money, blah blah blah. Guess it is about finding a good shop that actually wants your business.

Loud pipes save lives?

You’re only going to get attention/trouble if you are driving around being a jerk though. RCMP have better things to do than chase down your pickup.

Then you’re probably an airline pilot.

More like loud pipes save souls. And it’s not that I break traffic laws, it’s that people still in the GLP process face a little more scrutiny regarding their vehicles than people with their Class 5s.

Bypasses and the like aren’t allowed either (even from rust).

Plus, I’m still in the graduated licensing program, so my vehicle faces noticeably more scrutiny than most others.

Make sure your signals and lights work and your front window is not cracked. If you are worried get a driving school car for one lesson and the test.

I’ve never heard anyone getting hassle about a de-cat with the old or the new glp - be glad we don’t Aircare in the Interior! You would have a whole other headache.

The examiner is not going to climb under your truck to check you’ve got OEM exhaust.. Maybe if you were racing around Bernard at WOT you might get yourself a vi... but I even doubt it would come to that..

Meanwhile I’m driving around in a decatted demuffled e38 and nobody batts an eye.

Even drove from Langley to UBC and back on open headers a while ago, with a detour down cambie to west 4th where I got stuck at a light in the alley between the Vancouver PD and the cambie st bridge. (under the very echo-ey viaduct.) The cops standing on the street in front of the station gave me some hard looks, but I made it home unscathed.

Now I’m gonna go knock on some wood.

Everything on my truck works, save for the little underhood light. It’s not the examiner I’m worried about. The local RCMP are apparently going on a VI blitz.

There are more than enough brodozers driving around K-town to keep them occupied.

Just drive with a level head, pay attention and don’t goof off; you can be the 1%..

Aircare is a thing of the past. Disbanded effective Jan 1, 2016 if I’m not mistaken.

My cars used to be registered on the island all because of a pesky check engine light.

I didn’t even know this, I haven't known anyone to get nailed for too loud exhaust or a non-stock system. Usually they don't know enough about to cars to even tell if it's changed from stock. I drove a de-catted e24 for a few months, my friend drove a straight-piped e28, currently drives a de-muffled 540i, another friend drives a de-muffled 740i....I think they only use that part of the law to VI someone if they really don't like them. If you're just in your stock, inoffensive pickup I'm pretty sure you're gonna be fine.

It’s relatively inoffensive, but it definitely ain’t stock.

Sorry I mean it probably looks stock to cops. They're gonna be more worried about diesels with huge lifts and stacks

I know lots of people with aftermarket stuff and never heard of anyone getting busted when I lived in BC, granted it was sorta rural.
